Reduced fuel consumption with a performance bonus

The 90 kW TSI engine is once again a prime example of efficient “downsizing”: with an engine capacity of 1.4 litres delivering 90 kW (122 hp) and markedly improved torque characteristics, it consumes around 6 % less petrol than the less powerful 1.6 FSI, which it will replace in the long term.

Optimised fuel mixture

One of the factors that make this possible is the newly developed injector with six fuel bores for electronic direct injection. The injector jets are ideally aligned in relation to the engine to achieve more efficient distribution of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

Charge-air intercooling for improved dynamics

Another new development is the water-cooled intercooler for the turbocharger. The low-temperature circuit of the intercooler is independent of the engine cooling system. As a result it has been possible to more than halve the volume of the charge air system. Consequently a high charge pressure is built up much more quickly. This results in improved dynamics as a result of minimal lag times before achieving maximum charge in the combustion chambers. Even without the additional supercharger, there is no “turbo-lag” with the 90 kW TSI engine. Finally, the maximum torque of 200 Nm is available from as low as 1500 rpm.

Weight reduction also saves petrol

Weight reduction also saves petrol

The weight of the new 90 kW engine has been considerably reduced by a whole string of measures compared with the TSI twinchargers – by a total of 14 kilograms. The range of measures stretches from the lightened cylinder head cover and a weight saving of 304 grams per camshaft to the optimised design of the cylinder head.
