The digital sound package from Volkswagen compensates for the acoustic problems of the vehicle interior to deliver an undistorted sound of the best possible quality. The core feature of the digital sound package is DSP (Digital Sound Processing). This is a highly specialised microprocessor that processes the music signal with no time delay, digitally – i.e. with no loss – and separately for each speaker. Speed-dependent volume adjustment

The digital sound processor not only adjusts the volume automatically to the vehicle speed, to match the change in the interior noise level, but also adapts to the change in pitch. As the speed increases, the background noise level not only rises, but its pitch (frequencies) also changes. Thus at higher speeds it interferes especially with the bass information of the music signal. The DSP therefore dynamically increases the bass, in addition to raising the volume, in order to preserve the full sound spectrum. Volume compression ensures that quiet sections of a piece of music remain clearly audible without any need to adjust the volume. This sound modification helps to preserve driver concentration, thus enhancing active safety.

Digital delay compensation

In a car, one speaker is always closer to the driver than the other. The sound misalignments resulting from the differences in distance can be corrected by digital delay compensation. That means that the speaker positioned furthest away produces its audio signal a few thousandths of a second earlier than the next speaker. The overall effect for the listener is the sensation of being right at the centre of the music.

Spatial simulation

From dance floor beats to the jazz cellar. The DSP can be set for any music style at the press of a button and gives a whole new dimension to your listening experience. By adding early reflections and reverberations, the sound processor can simulate a concert hall or a rock arena in the car. This lends the car’s small sound space new dimensions and the sound acquires a greater richness of tone.
